What kind of projects and events can The Homefront generate? In addition to art exhibitions (more on this in my next post) I’ve been thinking about activities like these:

Sunday Music
Concerts and refreshments with the artists.

Film and Cooking Lab
Film lectures followed by a food demonstration.

Tea Salon
Conversations on art and literature; news and analysis; special topic discussions.

For those who don’t go to church on Sundays, come and embrace new music at The Homefront. Let’s think in the manner of Pierre Boulez, and listen to music that demands some risk and effort, or danger, instead of sticking to safe ground. I like the idea of bringing new music to where people live and organizing “rug concerts”--removing the seats of the concert hall and sharing the floor with players and audience. We’ll play new music and have open discussions with a view towards being creative and “dangerous”.

Television shows feature cooking as a visual and performing art. But what is cooking, really and how does it serve our senses in everyday life? Let’s communicate the metaphors of cooking in the spirit of Peter Kubelka. The idea is to present a series of lectures on studying the art, theory and history of film. We’ll compare the images and sounds of film with our eyes and ears, and then explore the relationships between food and film through the materials, preparation, participation, craft, textures, touch and taste of cooking.

A salon is a gathering of individuals from different social groups to discuss culture, literature or ideas. Today there are many variations on the salon: book clubs are one such phenomenon. In my mind I associate salons with academic discussion or polite conversation. Can we extend the salon to a more public sphere, making it an informal and intellectual meeting place? What if we were to discuss the news of the day, rather than watching it at home or talking about it casually with coworkers? The goal of the Tea Salon is to advance new thoughts, not stories; to speak with candor, clarity and openness; to bring a sense of urgency into the culture of our everyday lives.

  2. Sounds like a great idea - you could even leave the itinerary for a particular Sunday or weekend up to an online vote/audience selection. American Idol style!
